The latest and exciting developments at our Lady of Kibeho Orphanage, Kiwenda Ward in Gombe Division Nansana Municipality Wakiso District, is the completion of a project to provide safe and clean water. This has been possible with support from Rotary Club Calgary Canada, and supervision from Rotary Club of of Gayaza Uganda.
At the time of commencement of this project, the Orphanage and Springfield Junior School sharing the same campus with a population of over 400 school children was using water from a partial protected spring well of approximately 5m wide by 5m long by 2m deep. Access of water required using a manual pumping system that was switched on twice a day to fill the different reservoir tanks. In addition, the spring well was located at a lower level, below the orphanage school septic tank and soak away pit with a risk of storm water flowing into the spring well in the event of rainfall.
RC Gayaza supported processes that led to provision of water using using green energy. We Benchmarked from the hydro-geophysical survey report prepared for the area to obtain proposals and eventually contracted Kastew Construction Ug. Ltd. a company that undertook the construction of the different water sources. This as dual bore hole water project with a manual borehole and an electrified water pump system. Special water points have been placed at locations that benefit the neighbouring school and the communities of the village Gguluddene
in Kiwenda Ward.
The water project is worth usd 27,000. These funds supported the drilling, construction of a 10,000-litre stainless steel tank on an 8m tower, photo 2, and distribution of water to the orphanage (dormitory, Kitchen, play ground area) the school and a tap for the community around.
